The challenge of Slow Fashion for the (Uniform) world

Slow fashion calls the clothing world to reorient the quality of its products considering social and environmental aspects – and not just appearance

Fast fashion is no longer an option for uniform clothing.

As airlines continually look for sustainability solutions, often the tons of uniforms worn by aviation professionals are forgotten.

A large airline has around 20,000 crew wearing an average of 20 pieces of uniform clothing and accessories each, from shirts to badges, from bags to shoes. The wrong choice of materials and it could be ordering 20 tonnes of unsustainable clothing to be offset elsewhere.

In opposition to fast fashion, slow fashion is a more sustainable socio-environmental alternative in the fashion world. Slow Fashion was largely  celebrated in Lisbon with the 55th edition of this year’s Lisbon Fashion Week.

Slow Fashion is about valuing each garment and making it last

Slow Fashion seeks a more personal relationship with each garment, in which the items are more durable and valued as they used to be. It reduces the social and environmental impacts of the industry.

Concerned with the entire product cycle – from the clothing production process to the moment when consumers purchase – slow fashion is a movement that values sustainability in the fashion world from an environmental and social point of view. Its main features are:

  • Small collections;
  • Durable material;
  • Longer useful life of clothes;
  • Timeless design;
  • Fair value.

Slow Fashion is linked to the deceleration of fashion cycles, offering quality pieces that cross seasons, opposing large-scale industrial production and mass consumption, in other words, fast fashion.

Therefore, one of the most significant advantages of slow fashion is precisely the reduction of waste.

Slow fashion reinforces environmental awareness, always paying attention to costs that include ecological and social costs. The search for 100% recycled, organic and hazardous-free materials is also a relevant factor.
